Armstrongs Vintage Emporium
On Grassmarket there is a (relatively) small shopfront behind which lurks a massive emporium of vintage clothing ranging from morning coat to jeans, from the ball gown of your dreams to 70s blouses capable of giving you nightmares (not to mention the Scottish gear). So if that wad of banknotes is burning a whole in your pocket or a black hole has opened up in your wardrobe - you know where to go.
The Aladdin’s Cave-style Armstrong’s shops have gone from strength to strength since Brendan O’Brien, Miss O’Brien’s father, bought the business 30 years ago.
Kylie Minogue and Franz Ferdinand are among the celebrities who have raked through its rails searching for clothing to set them apart from the crowd.
Armstrong’s, Scotland’s most fashionable second-hand clothes store, has long been a favourite with fashionistas who are prepared to look off the beaten track to its stores on the Southside and the Old Town for stylish buys.
As well as the Grassmarket store, Armstrong’s has another shop in Clerk Street and trades as The Rusty Zip in Teviot Place.
